Meeting of 05/17/2011 - Visit from the Interact Club of West Tech

It was a delightful meeting. We received the enthusiastic and energetic members of the Interact Club of West Tech. They gave a very well organized and designed presentation on their activities, and then told us about their personal and professional projects as well as their motivation to join this service organization. It is gratifying to meet these caring young people who want to help build better communities. Each Interactor received a pin from a member of our club. We all thank them for their work, the authorities of West Tech for their support and Ted Baker and Jerry Kops for their guidance and dedication to this project.

Corazón Superbuild in Tecate, Mexico

A dedicated group of Rotarians from our Club and their spouses went to Tecate, Mexico over the weekend to work in a Corazón Superbuild project in Tecate, Mexico. The Pierces, the Novotnys, the Coxs and the Lotts (I hope I'm not leaving anybody out) were there. Some commented that it was only the ladies who worked, though this couldn't be confirmed. In the following picture, Robyn's shirt looks much dirtier than Tom's, which may taken as an evidence of the previous statement.

Our speaker this week was Randy Walker, Director of Aviation of McCarran Airport. A great informative presentation on the past, present and future of the second largest-volume airport in the world and its intricate importance to our city and its economy.
President Bill Pierce honored our men and women in uniform and reminded us of the sacrifice of those who serve this country risking their lives in distant lands to keep the freedom we enjoy at home.

Meeting of 04/26/2011 - John L. Smith, Las Vegas Review Journal columnist

The speaker was John L. Smith, columnist for the Review-Journal. John is highly respected and well known and read. He described the difference between a reporter and a communist, which si primarily one who reports events based on facts and one who writes topical opinions. He has plenty of those.

Recognizing a graying Rotarian audience he talked until Pres. Bill stood up, thus avoiding any questions. Brett, where were ya? He loves writing in Las Vegas because it is a circus that never leaves town. Several of his opinions follow.

Mining is making too much money with the rise in gold prices and is grandfathered into a low tax position, thus not helping to pay for education. Internet poker will be legalized because Senator Reid will push it because the casino bosses, who presumably fund Reid's elections, want it now. They too are making too much money without paying enough taxes. Internet poker, that is. John does not seem to like any enterprise that is successful without paying more taxes. He did not mention increasing taxes on gaming or taxes on small businesses. No reason to lose even more friends than he already has.

He made an excellent point about cutting funds for education by cutting the school day or year. It's an absurd solution. Also unmentioned was Nevada tax strategy which ignores property taxes that are so low they have no effect toward funding schools as in almost every state in the union.

John was raised in Las Vegas and writes an excellent column whether one agrees with his opinions or not. He is also an avid supporter of childhood cancer, and promotes many worthwhile community projects.

I was late but arrived in time to hear Ted and Duncan complaining about the food. Ashley is home but not improving. Duncan's daughter was in the crowd at the White House chanting USA! Pretty hard to top Duncan's happy fines. There was a visitor from Germany who described his district and club. Next week is Randy Walker, Director of Aviation for Clark County, which promises to be interesting.

Meeting of 04/26/2011 - Visit of Mayor Oscar Goodman

Today Mayor Oscar Goodman spoke to the best crowd we've had lately - 23 members and 8 guests, including our friends Bernie and Jennifer Hunt. In past surveys Mayor Goodman is our all-time favorite speaker, and he did not disappoint. I've sat with him before, and recently heard him speak at another luncheon, so I'll add tidbits from those occasions. The Mayor does not eat lunch. In his career as a litigator he was always preparing to go to court which resulted in a nervous stomach. So he learned to do without the mid-day meal. He was previously asked his position on legalized prostitution, to which he declared his opposition based on his constituents belief it is immoral and because of the slave trade which has resulted. But he considers it an American right to have the debate, which he supports.

He described his movie career and the permit process. Previously he mentioned that he cannot memorize lines, so the directors hated working with him. Maybe that's the reason for so many cutting room floors. This must be a learning defect of some sort because he is as sharp and quick witted as ever. The stories of his successes downtown are legendary. When I moved here 17 years ago previous mayors were trying to so the same things; Oscar Goodman is elected and presto, most of it got accomplished. Well, maybe 12 years isn't presto, but Brett Grant, slightly right-of-center Republican, complimented a liberal democrat as the best we've had, and he got a standing ovation. Are these Rotarians? Such passion!

He expressed an opinion on Neonopolis, its owner and the problems. Arson and getting whacked were solutions mentioned.

Jerry Kops and Mike Link asked two great questions. Jerry asked about his mob past and we got a terrific story about his client, Jimmy Chagra, and the murder trail in San Antonio where the sitting judge was murdered. When the cabbie picked him up to leave, he asked the future mayor if he was here for the Chagra trial, and then described how Chagra should be strung up and, well, tortured for what he had done to the the good judge. Then the cabbie asked Oscar which side he was on...Oscar replied "the FBI."

Mike then asked Oscar to join our club on July 7, when he leaves office. The Mayor did not say no! Who is going to follow up? We should have to buy tickets to sit with him each week; can you imagine? His Honor is interviewing with the Convention Authority among others for his post political career. Canyon Gate is home to the top LVCVA people, maybe we got a shot.

Cleo reported on the Dan Stover music finals. The performances were well done but there were not many participants, unfortunately. Duncan had yet another happy fine, bragging on his son, Richard. Pres. Bill had a sad fine as Ashley is doing worse. Tom cross-fined Duncan and Chris cross-fined Tom. Chris won't be forgotten again! Futu cross fine for Brett, who is lollygagging at La Costa with his family all week.

Duncan reported on the lively Interact club at West Prep, which wants to sponsor a Kideract club. There will be a presentation for the Interact Club at West Prep Friday, June 3rd. Time and details to follow. They plan to attend our Red Rock clean-up on May 7th. Pres. Bill reported on a good District Assembly and upcoming dates for District Conference, June 11, and Corazon Super Build, May 14.

Our speaker, A.D. Hopkins, is a long time journalist and historian - the former editor of "The Nevadan." He has edited a new book about 100 interesting Nevadans who made a difference in their community. All are deceased, but he managed interviews with several before their passing. His talk started slowly as he described the methodology of selecting the people, but came alive as he described a few colorful characters. A teacher, the only teacher to be included, confronted a powerful politician who would not support education and whacked him across the chest with her crutch. Does Harry Reid come to mind? Not about education, just needing a firm whacking by a woman of character. Or anyone, actually. Then there was the first Mayor of Las Vegas who was a promoter to the point of bending the truth to achieve his goals for the city. Remind you of anyone in recent history? Proving that history repeats itself.

Speaking of...our calendar show next weeks speaker as none other than Mayor Oscar Goodman, our all-time favorite speaker and undoubtedly the best mayor we've ever had, despite what I said up there.

There were 18 members and one guest present today. This letter is also posted to our club blog, although I am uncertain how to get there. Hoping to be able to send it to everyone as a blog in the future, or as a spiffier newsletter format.

District Assembly in Victorville, CA

Several members of the Club went this year to the District Assembly in Victorville, CA. President Bill Pierce, and Ken Cox took the lead in contributing towards the purchase of wheelchairs in Mexico, Francie dragged Jorge into the president-elects training session and Jan Carlton made sure everybody behaved (sounds like an outline of a mini-series on HBO). It was a great meeting, very well organized, very educational and fun at the same time. The grand finale was a presentation and performance by Dwight Rogers (son of Western all-time stars Roy Rogers and Dale Earhart) and a fantastic barbecue. If you didn't attend, you sure missed something!

April 12, 2011

Winning checks of the Final Four fund raiser were distributed. Mike Link, the winner who can’t figure out how he won, received $ 400 and donated 1/2 to the charity account and 1/2 to Polio Plus. Kudos Mike! Ted Baker, traveling to Pittsburgh, won $ 200 and Brett and I got $ 100. I quickly stuck the money in my pocket, happy to break even. Oh, yes, the charity account has an extra $ 800. Yahoo!

There were numerous happy and sad fines; the only one that mattered was that Ashley went back to the hospital. If you are inclined to get on your knees, please pray for her recovery. Not going well right now.

Pres. Bill gave a pin for doing something I enjoy, the newsletter. Far more deserving, in my judgment, are Brett for his fund raising, Francie for her leadership, and Ken, Lynn , Lynn, Steve, Steve, Ted, Duncan, Jan, Ted, Jerry, Mike, Chris, Cleo, Luke. Who did I forget? A bunch of great Rotarians, please forgive me if I left you off my impromptu list. We don't have an 80 – 20 club, where 20 % do 80 % of the work. We are better, and we all know it. And we have fun! Oh, yeah, I forgot Tom and Robin, the best ever. Vegas Baby is coming and I know everyone will pull together for our only major fund raiser.

Our speaker was Darrel Austin with Jennifer Hansen of NV Energy, on the new smart meter program. The meters are already installed on 173,000 homes, including several of our members. The meters allow the consumer to monitor power usage as a car uses a dashboard to determine speed and ongoing gasoline usage. You can manage your usage on-line now, and in the future we will be able to control power usage and even manage certain appliances with a smart phone. Buck Rogers is smiling. The new meters are more accurate and safe, according to NV Energy. This is the wave of the future, clearly. There are operational savings for the company, of course. For issues call 702-402-4273.

And now, for news of the weekly golf game. Don Logan, multi-year speaker to our club and Rotarian Larry Brown, County Commissioner, joined Brett, Scott and me. Brett played 18 holes, a record for the past year or so, counting many pars on this fine day. Next week we have A.D. Hopkins on the history of Las Vegas. Every week we have great programs. Meeting of 04/05/2011 - LV Fire Chief Mike Myers

April 5, 2011 Meeting

The speaker was the Fire Chief of the Las Vegas Fire Dept. Mike Myers. He did a good job of describing the department; it’s mission and goals. They do more that most fire depts.. Around the country with fewer people and resources.

He specifically addressed pay, sick leave and overtime. He also answered questions about consolidation, as there are fire depts. in Henderson, North Las Vegas and Clark County. Starting fire fighters make less than $ 20 / hour and average $ 50,000 per year. A previous decision by the city determined it is less expensive to pay overtime than hire enough personnel to do the job required. That new fire fighter earns on average $ 25,000 in overtime. Benefits add about 50 % to the value of funded liability. Sick leave averages 6 days per year, and OT cannot follow sick leave. A real sticking point is accrued sick leave, which can add up to $ 100,000 at retirement. They are working to amend that rule. Upon questioning it seems the fraud we see reported in the media is with other fir depts. in the area, not the Las Vegas dept.

Brett announced his trip to Chicago proved to him he is getting good treatment here and will stay with his present oncologist. It was 28 degrees. No mention of a visit to Wrigley Field.

Pres. Bill said Ashley is home, still struggling but glad to be home. Mike Link won $ 400, Ted $ 200, and Tom and Brett $ 100 each in the Final 4 board. The charity account is now $ 800 richer, thanks to Brett and all participants.

The annual Board Retreat is April 20 at Canyon Gate from 8 am – 2 pm with lunch provided. All members are welcome.

One visiting Rotarian was from Scotland and described his club of 40 members. Their annual fundraiser last year made $ 40,000 USD. Time to get Vegas Baby started, as we now hang our hat on it.

Meeting of 03/29/2011 - Dr. Leslie DiMare, President of Nevada State College

What a terrific meeting!

Our speaker was Dr. Leslie DiMare, President of Nevada State College. Even though Lynn Price's husband teaches there, I realized how little I know about the institution. It fills a gap between CSN community college and UNLV and UNR as it is a four year state college with a research emphasis. Admission requires a 2.0 GPA with no SAT requirement. The tuition is less that UNLV or UNR and more than CSN. It has a 19 % graduation rate, which is considered good for that category. To illustrate how important education is toward contributions to society and the community, over a lifetime high school dropouts cost the State over $ 5,000 while a high school graduate contributes $ 287,000 and a college graduate contributed over $ 894,000.

Dr. DiMare was followed by seven RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) participants that we sponsored. Each had a format for a short presentation: what they learned, their biggest challenge, and future planned vocation. We had a future photographer, lawyer, civil engineer and All-American football player! Each gave a collection of their thoughts on the weekend experience. Common themes were getting out of their comfort zones, not being too judgmental and learning to listen and follow. They are high school juniors that are obvious leaders and not used to following, but when surrounded by a team of leaders they had to accept others input on issues. Lynn price got a round of applause for her leadership, with Ted Baker, for putting the program together, including interviews and selection process.

Lynn Purdue summarized how pleased we are with these students and announced she is the co-chair for next year's RYLA. There are several ways to get involved as many of our club has in the past. See my RYLA team photo attached, one of my all-time favorite Rotary experiences. At the beginning none of my eight would look at me much less speak to me (or each other for that matter!), and two days later I had several asking for college and life advice, and two asked for me to write recommendations to honor societies or college programs. We left with a collection of hugs and well wishes.

I know everyone is waiting for results of the occasional Rotary golf outing, and whether Duncan Lee won all the money, but you'll have to wait until next week. Scott Ruthe and I are arranging financing to pay off the skins we lost.

Next weeks speaker is Mike Myers, Fire Chief if the Las Vegas Fire Department.

Meeting of 03/22/2011 - Ambassadorial Scholar

President Bill led the meeting today, with plenty of happy, sad and cross fines, and enthusiasm too! There were 17 members and 5 guests and visiting Rotarians. Notable happy fine was for Ken Cox becoming a Texas Longhorn fan. Just took the right sales pitch, apparently.

The Interact Club at West Prep is active, reported Lynn Price, and Duncan Lee delivered books and presented pins to those who worked at a soup kitchen. They have more community activities planned and are coming to help at our next Red Rock Clean-up.

The Fremont Club celebrated its 25th anniversary at the Fremont Street Experience - where else? Mayor Goodman spoke, and the Fremont canopy show featured a finale of Rotary with photos through the past 25 years of the Fremont Club service and fellowship. It was pretty emotional for some of their members.

Prsident Bill challenged the club to match his $ 100 donation for the relief efforts in Japan. Brett Grant's radio station, KSHP-AM 1400, is running their own effort of Shelter Boxes. We decided to support that, and raised $ 350 in a matter of a few minutes.

The speaker was a returning Ambassadorial Scholar from Green Valley. He graduated from Northern Arizona Univ. in music and math and went to New Zealand to work on his masters thesis. He lived in Christ Church but visited 4 countries, 60 cities and made presentations to 49 Rotary Clubs. His presentation spoke of connections through trust, friendship, honesty and hope. He was a facilitator for RYLA, which is quite different than ours, as it is for 18-24 year olds. The hospitality of the people of New Zealand impressed him the most along with New Zealand Airways, which has a daily $ 2 ticket to a different city. That facilitated his travels greatly.

Rotary Clubs in New Zealand sponsor an Emergency Response Kit, similiar to but pre-dating the Shelter Box program, for disasters throughout the country and neighboring islands. These were important following the recent eqrthquakes, which have had 4,000 after shocks.

Rotarians there play a wine game at club meetings which he introduced to us with a bottle of new Zealand Savignon Blanc. It replaces happy bucks as a fun fundraiser, where everyone stands up and puts their hands on their head or tail, a coin is flipped, winners remain standinbg for another round until there is a winner. Meeting of 03/15/2011 - Chuck Jackson, Youth Symphony Orchestra Director

There was a monthly Board Meeting at 10:30 today, with Pres. Bill presiding. Jan, Tom L., Duncan, Ken, Jerry and Francie were present. Luke joined us briefly. We approved the minutes and financials. There was discussion about eliminating prayer in favor of a more politically correct and RI favored “inspirational minute” to open a meeting. The continuation of the prayer was unanimously approved. Pat Fitzgibbons is smiling. We also discussed schools, Interact, Board retreat, Red Rock clean-up, Dist. Conference and PR. Francie has books for West Prep, which Duncan will deliver. Also a West Prep student was featured on page 1 of the RJ today for receiving a scholarship to the Exeter Academy. Awesome achievement. The Summerlin View will be invited to meetings with RYLA presentations and/or a 15th Anniversary historical meeting. The agenda of the latter is uncertain, and it led to a discussion of a club history being committed to hard drive, and maybe even paper. All members are welcome to attend Board Meetings, which are held the 3rd Tuesday each month at 10:30 am.

We had a lively meeting. Jerry Kops opened with a prayer for the Japanese victims and hope for our understanding of God’s plan when tragedy strikes. Visiting Rotarian Kai Wolter from Monchengladbach, Germany, related how his club led the way in his area in the eighties to admit women after the US Supreme Court ruled Rotary in the USA could not exclude women. By 2011 six of eight clubs in his area now welcome female members. Irony noted.

The March Madness board filled up - the winner will receive $ 400, but the club’s charity account is the real winner. Several happy, sad and cross fines; most notable was Brett, who is surviving his second bout with chemo and going to Chicago to meet new oncologists.

Our speaker, Charles Jackson, was a professional musician for 35 years before becoming a high school music teacher. He gave a great speech about the value of music in education. A telling statistic was that more music majors applying to medical school are admitted that pre-med majors by a large margin. If all teachers were as dedicated and talented as Mr. Jackson our public schools would be performing at a far higher level that we currently see. He teaches that one doesn’t get a raise for showing up, it’s showing up and making a difference that counts. Every student in his music classes has graduated high school. That may not sound like much until you think about how many teachers in the Clark County School District can make that claim. (Very few, I’d guess). Pretty impressive! Thanks to Mr.Jackson for making an inspirational difference is his students and teaching us a few lessons along the way.

Last but not least, Tom Lott received a Paul Harris Fellow!. Congratulations, Tom!

Meeting of 02/08/2011 - Presentation by Wayne Walker, Certified Hypnotherapist

Bernie was back! What a joy to see you, my friend. Cut his hair, too. He is going to be the new Pres. of the District E-club. That should be interesting - Bernie will be good at pushing the envelope (fellowship via a modem).

Francie ran the meeting in Bill's vacationing absence. A cruise I'm told. She tried to tie a theme into a teaching moment, but I fear her elementary school experience led her way over the heads of the audience. Don't give up, Francie, just remember what you're working with here. (Me, Novotny, etc). Great opening Valentines game which rewarding knowing spouses names, etc.

The annual basketball game "tailgate" is Saturday, Feb. 12. Ken Cox said 10 are going so far, meeting at The Hofbrau House at 2:30 with a 5:00 pm game time against San Diego State, one of the top teams in the country. Not too late to get tickets, call Ken if you want to go. This is always one of our funnest events, even if the Rebels lose.

Tom Novotny mentioned that, to show the effects of the economy, Paris Hilton was on his Southwest flight back from LA Sunday. He did not know if she had a court date, or found a new casino which had not banned her yet. Tom obviously did not develop a close relationship - hey, its only an hour flight and he's not moving as fast as in his youth. She was wearing a warm up suit and big sunglasses, probably glad to be out of the gutter but ashamed to be on Southwest.

Brett Announced that not only did we have an almost full Super Bowl board, which puts about $ 1,000 into the charity account. He also runs his own board at the radio station (KSHP-AM) for the club and turned over $ 900. Wow! Now that Brett's back we are going to fund more and more school projects in the future.

The speaker was Wayne Walker, a certified Hypnotherapist. Wayne was born in Dallas and raised on his Dad's cutting horse ranch. He is a multiple black belt, and was the youngest hand to hand combat teacher in the history of the Army Special Forces Ranger School. They are very tough hombres. He led us through several group mind relaxation excercises. According to Wayne we all experience hypnosis via day dreaming (just call me Walter Mitty). When asked the percentage of successful hypnosis treatments to stop smoking, it is 100...if the subject really wants to stop. The same with nail biting, so I signed up. I will be the guinea pig here, and will report later on the effectiveness to stop a 50 year-long bad habit. I have more, but do not want to fess up in public.

Meeting of 02/01/2011 - Kelso's enlighting predictions

Notes from the meeting today, with a nod to Bernie. One of these days, when writer block strikes, I will re-cap the effect Bernie had on our club in a short duration, which was awesome. However, with Kelso Sturgeon as speaker, that moment is postponed.

First a recap of today's announcements. Francie reports that our relationship with Agassi Prep has never been better. They need and appreciate us. We've supported them since Pres. Baker's term, which was some eight years ago. Note: Ted Baker, who I barely knew then, asked me to be Treasurer that year. I was perfectly content to be a knife and fork Rotarian, and that started my involvement with our noble organization. He must have been desperate, but it changed Rotary for me.

Also: District Assembly is April 16 (see Jan Carlton); Rotarian work day is April 30 (Ken Cox); May 14 is Corazon Super-Build (Tom Lott); RYLA needs more female facilitators (Lynn Purdue). Pres. Bill just got back from Presidents Advance, which is not an "advance" at all but in the middle of the President's year, coming in January each year. Bill was unimpressed with the food in La Jolla. This from a guy that probably ate C rations for days on end at times. A short mention on Pres. Bill's doo today. Yes, it was windy, but that lid at the podium was pretty bad. I'm prepping for a fine next week.

Now to Kelso. Despite his predictions of the Vikings winning the super bowl this year and Virginia Tech winning the BCS, all of which he freely admitted, he pointed out he picked the Saints when nobody gave them a chance. Long time ago it seems.

Kelso is one of our most entertaining speakers each year, and a supporter of our mission for kids, many time placing a bet and committing the rewards to our charity account. If only he'd win one of those... but today he opened with a $ 10 Happy Fine to honor his autistic grandson. Having never been around an autistic child, like many of us, he told some stories of what a great kid he is. The child predicted the death of a parakeet who seemed healthy and happy, and a flat tire shortly before its demise. Put him in for football predictions, coach! Very nice start to a football talk:

It's a bet and sweat Super Bowl he said as both teams are good and can win. Most million dollar bets so far are going for the Packers. He thinks the skill positions will win it. Rodgers is playing better than Ben now, they are even in the RB position. Pitt has the best defense, and plays field position ball. Pack will pass, Pitt will run (which should keep the score down, he feels).

Kelso picks the PACKERS laying 2 1/2 points and likes the UNDER at 44 points. Some of the proposition bets he favors include:
1. More than two players other than a QB will pass the ball
2. Keith Miller will score a TD
3. James Starks will score a TD
4. YES there will be an overtime

2011-01-25 Meeting

District Attorney David Roger spoke about crime and punishment in
Clark County. He has been at it since the 1980's and due to his
efforts to bring more criminals to trial, during a period of almost
epidemic gang and drug wars in Las Vegas, violent crime has actually
decreased. Quite an amazing record, and surely a prime reason he is
re-elected time and time again. His previous visit was about 10 years
ago. Questions were many, and each answer was thoughtful.
They included his take on legalizing marijuana (against) and why
Nevada doesn't have a 3 strikes, you're out like California (we have a
similar law).   Mr. Roger said 80 % of all crime is committed by 20 %
of the criminals, a curiously familiar organizational statistic. His
zeal is directed at that 20 % who continually repeat and have earned
the right to spend the remainder of their lives behind bars.

Announcements were about the Corazon Super Build International
project, May 14. So far we have Tom and Robin Novotny, Ken Cox, Bill
Pierce and Tom Lott signed up. We will leave Friday morning, May 13
and usually stay at a beach front condo for some nice R&R fellowship
time before embarking to Tecate, Mexico Sat. for the home build. Brett
announced our Super Bowl board fund raiser. Squares are $ 25 each and
the pot is split by the winners and the club's charity account. The
board almost sold out today, the best sales record in recent memory.
Francie announced there is an awards ceremony at Agassi Prep this
Friday at 8:15 am. If you have not attended an awards ceremony they
are worthwhile and enlightening. You won't regret taking that hour
out of your day. Also, Mayor Goodman is speaking April 26.

At the Board meeting we discussed the schools we support and any
possible changes as Principals are changing. Without the support of a
principal or counselor our good intentions find limited success.
Jerry Kops gratefully accepted and was voted to be the head of all
school point-of-contacts. There is a more official and impressive
title, which I cannot remember. Jerry has as much or more experience
leading a school as anyone in the club. His wisdom and hard work are
appreciated.

Happy and cross fines were many, and included Lott, Grant, Lee, Cox
and Novotny. Not all were fair, like when Cox and Pierce ganged up on
me, but hey, it's a good cause.

After the meeting a group of Past Presidents (Baker, Lott and Ruthe)
welcomed Brett back to the game he loves. Under spectacular skies we
watched in amazement as he barely missed a birdie putt on his first
hole back. The graceful tempo was intact as well as pure ball
striking. His ball doesn't go as far (yet) as the former long hitter,
but the game is still there! All of us would call the day a long
Rotary moment. (Except when he out drove me. I would have checked
for an illegal ball, but he gave me some of his to use, so no luck
there.) We'll try to do this many times until it gets hot, and all
golfers are welcome to join. Happy golfers below.

On October 31st 2010 (Halloween night) a reception committee from the Rotary Club of Las Vegas West welcomed "It's Vegas, Baby!" first winners ever: Tatiana and Victoria Vinda and , from Moscow, Russia.

President Bill Pierce gives the winners their vouchers for the hotel, shows, spa, and the rest o the prices for this fabulous contest. A luxurious limousine is waiting for the ladies for their trip to the hotel.

And, yes, we have slot machines at the airport!

Meeting of 10/26/2010 - Visit of DG Roger Schulte

District Governor Roger Schulte visited today, meeting first with
Pres. Bill Pierce and Sec. Jan Carlton, then with the Board of
Directors. As with every visiting District Governor, he was impressed
with the giving our club demonstrates to support its mission and other
projects.

He was our speaker at the meeting and delivered a terrific message
based on his "Rotary Moments," though he did not refer to them as
such. Roger is a retired middle school principal whose mother taught
elementary school. He described how his mother would shake a hand and
examine it, remembering that person, or child, for life. Roger
transitioned that into eyes, and told of his visit to India to
administer polio vaccine in a small Muslim village which had
experienced a recent case, a small child. There were photos during
his talk of many children and parents, and their eyes. The kids were
worried and scared but the parents were happy and grateful.

Rogers' next trip was to South America with the Rotoplast program,
where plastic surgeons repair cleft palates and lips, as well as other
deficiencies. Again, the pictures of the eyes tell a big story. Of
course, our club supports both programs. Several of us were reminded
of trips to Mexico for the Corazon super-build projects, and the
famous trip to El Fuerte. Roger mentioned the District support for
Corozon and told the story of the grand mother who hugged everyone at
the conclusion of the home our club helped build. I was making a
video of it and you can't write drama like this (if anyone missed it,
i will send it to you, just ask). Rogers message was a take off on
the Rotary slogan, "Service Above Self:" Service to Others.

If you missed the meeting, thinking well, the DG is making a speech,
how boring - you missed a real treat. Roger is right up there with
our own Tom Novotny! By the way, he only mentioned membership,
District Conference (June 9-12, 2011 in La Jolla), and foundation
giving in passing. He did his homework and knows we are already
working on and doing a good job in these areas.
There weren't a lot of happy or cross fines. I didn't mention the
Texas Rangers nor Ken Fong the SF Giants. Duncan's chess champion son
had a big hit as safety in football; I sent his name to Mack Brown,
who needs help saving his job.

Every time I miss a few meetings and return, I am reminded how
important the fellowship and personal contact means in the Rotary
experience. Ted Baker and I found a connection we had never known,
despite many meals, golf and fishing together. Its difficult to get
that being an occasional visitor. We were happy to see Bill Kink,
doing well, and remembered Brett and Bernie during both the Board and
during regular meeting, who we all miss a lot.

His Honor Mayor Goodman failed to show up for our meeting today -
probably got some scheduling wires crossed. I'm betting he will make
up for it in a rescheduled visit. Interim President Bill Pierce
managed to produce an entertaining meeting with a healthy dose of
fines and cross fines, thankfully no tap dancing. Past President Mike
Sexton was fined for appearing in the Business Press, yet again, at a
power broker meeting sponsored by Nevada State Bank. Mike's fine will
go toward paying for books on a grant that Francie is working on. Ken
Cox donated his raffle winnings last week to the Interact Club
formation. Yours truly was mercilessly blasted with reminders of the
UCLA victory against the Longhorns at home. Lynn Price announced she
felt my pain, her teams also losing. (Tom Novotny is wondering who or
where Austin Peay College is now that Wisconsin beat them 70-0.
Proving that the Big 10 or so can whip up some weak schedules with the
Big 12 and Pac 10 or so.)

Francie Summers announced that she and Duncan Lee had an extremely
productive meeting with the elementary principal of the Agassi
Academy, and that we will be involved with that school this school
year. Also, Ted Gurr announced that Jerry Kops and Ted Baker will
lead the Interact club formation at West Tech. These are the final
two pieces of our school support for the year. Ken Cox announced the
tailgate party is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 18 this year. There
will be the ubiquitous sign-up sheet in the weeks to come.

I had hoped to fill the page with anecdotes from Hizzoner, but it will
have to wait until next time.

In Bernie's absence I offered to write the weekly newsletter. You'll
see I need a good editor, but ploughing ahead...

After a productive Board Meeting, we had our best Rotary meeting in a
long while. Not only did we have a good speaker, Brett Grant showed
up. Everyone was thrilled to see him. He looked great though
admitted he was tired. He had spent the morning at the radio station
(KSHP-AM) and did a sports show on air. Big day for the first time
out except to visit a doctor! He still has to take a weekly chemo
treatment, which unfortunately falls on Tuesdays, but promised to make
it to Rotary meetings when he is able.

Bill Pierce reported that Bernie is doing well but has a ways to go to
get stronger. Bernie resigned as President and the club, in fact, but
several continue to lobby for his return to the club in the future.
Bill Clink is reported to be swimming, but we did not have any more
information on his condition.

At the Board meeting a major discussion was the new Interact Club at
Southwest Tech. We decided to sponsor the club if we found a willing
lead Rotarian. And to pursue the Interact Club at West Prep. Ted
Gurr, Lynn Price, Francie Summers and others have done a wonderful job
leading us down these paths. While Southwest Tech may not technically
be a school of needy children, there will be many in that situation as
it is a magnet school. The expense to start an Interact Club is
small, and the students raise most of the money themselves. If
needed, we agreed to "pass the hat" for any extra funding necessary.

Other actions at the Board Meeting was to amend the budget to
eliminate a Foundation Grant and an unspecified International project
in the face of fewer fund raisers. With those deletions, and without
King of the Hill, Super Bowl board and March Madness board the Charity
budget will be about 3,000 in the red. We have money in both bank
accounts, as always, so this is not a concern. The club is looking
for someone to step up and run the Super Bowl and March Madness
boards, which could put us in the black for the year.

All Board Meetings are open to all club members, and copies of the
budgets or financials are available to anyone that asks (just ask Jan
or myself).

Our speaker was an FBI Agent, Scott Hunter, who prosecutes white
collar crime. We have a lot of it and he gave some true life
examples. I noticed Ted Baker and Duncan Lee squirming in their
chairs at times during the presentation. I always wondered what they
did in that innocent looking office building on Sahara. The drive
pretty nice cars, but I've never heard any mention of yachts or the
Bahamas. Unless someone makes an anonymous call to Agent Hunter, we'll
probably never know. Ken Cox won the raffle and pulled the blue
marble to win the pot, estimated at several hundred dollars.

Next week: Mayor Oscar Goodman! The mayor joins us every year and is
our most popular speaker A great opportunity to bring a guest.

You'd think, wouldn't you, that the most recent past district governor would be allowed to rest upon his laurels for a while. But oh no, PDG Tom Novotny, just shy of two months retired from his hectic round of supervising District 5300, was called to the podium at our club's meeting Tuesday, Aug. 24.

On the agenda was the critical matter of presenting Tom with his insignia and certificate of membership in the Paul Harris Society.

And who signed the certificate? Why, it was none other than the-then disrict governor, Tom Novotny. What wonderful things are those stamps that can forge signatures so splendidly.

The Paul Harris Society recognizes those Rotarians who pledge at least a $1,000 annual contribution to the Rotary Foundation.

Just as cheerful as he always was, Brett goes home

Homeward bound at last

Surprise! Brett Grant was released from Southern Hills Hospital in Las Vegas on Monday afternoon, just over a week after he was admitted there.

Brett will continue his rehabilitation and recuperation from his home,

This is a remarkable and happy development for Brett, who has fought bravely and strongly against complications from a cancer operation at the City of Hope Hospital in Los Angeles for more than two months.

The picture was taken by Ken Cox, who ferried Brett home from the hospital.

All members of the Rotary Club of Las Vegas West send their good wishes to Brett and his family with the hope that it won'be too long before his recuperation allows him to come back to see us soon.

What Tom did on his summer vacation

No prizes for guessing what Tom Lott did on his summer vacation. What he did is what he does on any good day.

What he did was what Mark Twain called "a good walk, spoiled." What Winston Churchill said was a pursuit "whose aim is to hit a very small ball into a even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose."

Tom played golf. That is the sport A.A. Milne called "the best game in the world at which to be bad."

We are not saying Tom is bad at golf, of course. That's for his golfing buddies to determine.

Anyway, doesn't the real truth of golf spring from the joy one gets from it?

A phone call from Brett
Members usually get fined if their phones ring during a club meeting -- but when Bill Pierce's phone rang Tuesday, he got a cheer instead.

On the other end was Brett Grant, making a cheerful call to club members from his rehab room in Las Vegas. That's right, Las Vegas.

Brett came home to Vegas from the City of Hope hospital in Los Angeles last Friday.

He is now under the care of his Las Vegas oncologist and wife Kathy says he is progressing but is still weak.

She thanks everyone for their prayers and support during this trying time.

Kathy says Brett is checking his Facebook account and she encourages people to leave him messages on his wall.

When Brett called the club Tuesday, Bill put the phone on loudspeaker so everyone could hear the weak, but irrepressible voice of our much loved and absent member.

More to the point, Brett could hear the rousing cheer he was given by assembled members.

Let's hope it won't be long before he hears the rousing cheer we will give him when he walks back in through the doors of the Rotary Club of Las Vegas West.

Something's fishy here

Don't ask about the one that got away

Ok, so what did YOU do on your vacation? At least two of our members fled the Silver State for places with more water and supplied us photographic evidence.

Ken Cox flew off to Alaska to wrestle with salmon. That's him, right, the alive-looking one with the hat.

Ted Baker hightailed it to Hawaii with the kids. He spent his time photographing sea turtles and sunsets instead of bikinied babes on the beach. He was with the kids, remember.

Thanks, guys. Now, where are the photographs for the trips the rest of you took? We know you went somewhere. You weren't at our meetings.

Such a pretty smile

It's great to see him smiling at last. The indomitable Brett Grant manages one of his characteristic impish grins for the camera as he continues his medical fight.

Brett, one of the brightest lights of our Rotary club, and most sorely missed by all, has been battling complications from a cancer operation for more than a month at the City of Hope hospital in Los Angeles.

At first, we kept people up to date on Brett's condition through postings on this blog, mostly lifted from his family's notes on the hospital's Care Pages website.

But now Brett has recovered enough that he's able to write about his own condition on his beloved Facebook. Today he reports: New record today, 291 steps, 5 trips around the lobby. Last Wednesday I took 2 steps!

By the way, the Facebook posting is by doctors' orders. Brett's physicians think texting and other uses of his cell phone help him with his motor skills.

Wish his doctors would prescribe posting to this blog. We could do with generating some more interest.

Our new mates from Down Under

One of the great joys of becoming the most fabulous Rotary club in the known world is that we are talked about everywhere and are a club of choice for visitors from across the globe.

Our It's Vegas, Baby Internet-based raffle clearly is the better mousetrap that has caused the world to beat a path to our door.

Latest visitors drawn to our door are the super Aussie-friendly Brian and June Bragg, both members of the Wetherill Park Rotary Club in the western Sydney suburbs.

Brian is immediate past president of the club, who fled Australia the minute his year was over.

In the picture, Brian and Las Vegas West President Bernie Hunt swap banners. Our club president envies Brian for achieving his title of past president and for lighting out for the territory as soon as he could. Bernie has only 46 weeks to go, but hey, who's counting?

June is treasurer of Wetherill Park and both are Paul Harris Fellows.

Among our other guests who dropped in to say g'day to Brian and June was PDG Roy York of the Las Vegas Fremont Rotary Club. Roy has visited the land Down Under several times, including with Rotary groups. If reincation is true, he hopes to come back as an Australian.

Brian says he and June left Sydney the day after he handed over to a new president. They've spent the last six weeks wandering in western Canada and Alaska, then dropping into Las Vegas for a week to check out the delights of Sin City. They're visiting the Grand Canyon and then heading on for a week or so with friends in California before heading home.

The Wetherill Park club is similar to the Rotary Club of Las Vegas West. It was chartered in 1993 and is situated in the western suburbs of a big city. It focuses its energies on aid to local schoolchildren.

We are even roughly about the same size, though Wetherill Park is a wee bit larger, at 35 members. But our membership drive this year is set to propel us past them. Brian is membership chair of his club, so it's an international Olympics of membership, then.

Brett was able to stand up today and he is in a wheelchair sitting up straight.

Medically he is almost ready to come home, but he needs to be stronger before he is transferred to rehab in Vegas.

Please pray that his physical strength improves so he can come home.

I am returning home on Friday. Brett's parents are coming to California.

Meanwhile, another voice is heard

We know Brett is almost back to normal after his withering experience because he is back on Facebook. Fans of this sometimes useful social network can find the man displaying his vivacious wit there once again.

He's also responding as he can to text messages sent to his phone. Doctors have asked him to text as a medical tool -- they believe it will help with his coordination.

At the same time, though, they don't want to overwhelm him. Right now, he's probably getting just enough text time to keep him busy.

Standing, then walking
More from Kathy Grant
Brett's being moved to a room on the main floor tonight. He begins OT and PT twice a day starting tomorrow.

He got up again to stand and hopefully will be able to walk in a few days.

Tolerating food through the tube, but no word on when he will be able to eat. He's been off the vent all week.

Many of you have asked about sending gifts. He is now allowed to receive gifts now that he is in a regular room.

He is in room 4115.

And Rick Jakel adds:
Talked with Kathy tonight. Could hear Brett in background.

They are excited about his move to a regular room. It will be a much better, much quieter environment than was ICU.

The move hastens the day Brett will be able to return to the rehab hospital (probably Southern Hills) in Las Vegas.

The PT and OT two times a day is a big deal, too, in helping him regain his strength. The exercise, she says, wears him out.

Back to Vegas?
Kathy gives the latest update on Brett
Brett's been off the vent for a day and a half. Clamped G tube so we are hoping his stomach will start working.

He snapped at nurse twice today: didn't want to wear BP cuff anymore and wanted more ice chips than doctor is allowing, so good signs that he feels better.

Looking into two rehab hospitals in Las Vegas, where he will be transferred upon release from City of Hope..

Thank you to all who have visited. He has visitors every day, which is truly unbelievable considering he doesn't live in California.

This just in: The latest on Brett's butt
Kathy gives us the scoop:
Brett was able to get out of bed and stand for a few seconds.

He want you to know that his "butt cleared the bed."

Physical therapist is working on him right now.

Doctor is keeping him off the vent all night tonight. Once he is off he can be moved out of ICU.

No word on when they will resume feeding again.

Kathy reports on a peaceful Sunday afternoon:
Brett says hello to everyone and wants to thank all of you who have visited him.

Thank you also for all the cards. Not a day goes by that he does not have cards to open.

The nephrologist signed off on Brett's case today, so kidneys are good.

He still can't hold down food, but he is only on the vent at night, which is great.

He still needs work on getting his strength back, but we are hopeful that it will return quickly.

I have Brett's phone today, but if you want to text him a message, you can.

Doctors want him using his phone to help with fine motor skills.

Latest report on Brett

Hi it's Emily.

Today my dad was off the went for a total of 11 hours in a row. Yay!

He was changed to a regular ICU bed that can be changed for him to sit up.

He is getting much stronger with the PT and OT.

He wanted to drink something other than water so he drank iced tea and a vanilla milkshake.

He was going strong all day. His kidneys are working but not filtering fully.

Dominic and Zachary come tomorrow so that will also make him happy. I am going home tomorrow for dance team and camp.

Please keep praying. The prayers are definitely working!

Overall it is good news. He is still quite weak.

He was off the vent for a total of six hours today. Doctors want him off it completely soon.

Doctor stopped continual dialysis an hour ago.

Had to stop feeding tube yesterday since Brett wasn't tolerating it. Will start it again tomorrow.

He was off vent for four hours today. Told me he wants to go home. We are praying the kidneys start functioning without help of dialysis.

He passed a swallow evaluation so he may be able to eat soon if his stomach can tolerate it.

Nurses surprised us this morning and switched out Brett's trach so he could talk to us, which made the kids sooooo happy to hear his voice. I told her this morning that the boys were coming in and she wanted to surprise us.

He is still on dialysis but doctors may switch it out tomorrow so it is only three hours a day instead of 24/7. He spent several hours off the vent today, but is very tired afterwards. He watched the Cardinals game with the boys for a bit and highlights of Tiger Woods losing.

Boys go home w/ the Bullocks tomorrow. Em is still here with me ... she doesn't want to leave Brett.

I have never missed Vegas more. Thank you for the continued prayers and cards.

I thought I had posted last night, but I guess it did not go through.Today was a busy day. Started w/ surgeon pulling 1.5 liters of fluid from Brett's lungs.

He was taken off the vent for two hours but then put back on, which is a step in the right direction. Started a feeding tube today.

PT started yesterday. Kidneys are hanging on.

Dom and Zach came to see Brett today thanks to the Bullock family. Brett was thrilled to see the boys.

.Brett's parents are going home tomorrow after almost a month of living at the Marriott. I'm still mooching off of Angela and Jeff.

Emily has been with me all week and does not want to leave, but the Bullocks are taking the kids to Disneyland with their family tomorrow, which is a great break for all of them, but especially Emily.

More positive news about Brett
Rick Jakel reports:
Hung up a few minutes ago with Don Grant, Brett’s father, who was calling from Brett’s bedside.

Again, the news continues to be positive. Brett’s BIG continuous dialysis machine will be replaced with a smaller, portable one, which will not operate full time.

His kidneys are beginning to work. Tomorrow they will begin tube feeding him.

Don said he could be off the ventilator by early next week, which should allow him to talk.

There is some liquid in his lungs. They did X-rays and an ultrasound yesterday and will tap the location to remove the fluid early this afternoon. It appears that Brett's infection is completely under control.

Don, and Brett’s mother, Marlene, are so confident in his condition that they intend to return to their home in St. Louis for a few days commencing tomorrow.

More as I hear the news.

From Emily and Kathy
Kidneys are starting to kick in slowly but they are getting there.They are changing the dialysis from continual to three hours a day starting Saturday.

Brett has some fluid buildup on his lungs. May be pneumonia ... don't know yet. They will be draining it tomorrow morning so he can begin to move around and get back his strength.

Dominic and Zachary are coming down with the Bullocks tomorrow. I miss them so much it hurts.

Brett's parents have been a tremendous source of strength for the family and will be leaving Saturday.

Other than that, thank you for your help and prayers and especially to my in-laws, my parents and Brett's brothers and all of you who have visited, and sent cards.

Please keep praying.

Duncan Lee reports:
I just visited Brett at the hospital,and dropped off their mail.

Even though he couldn't speak, he was touched with emotion when I presented our signed stuff animal. He was conscious and had some facial expressions.

I didn't see Kathy who was showing the children L A, but I did meet Brett's parents.

It was nice to not have his quick-witted comebacks. I challenged him to be back at Rotary by the time I can next make a meeting in mid-August.

Overall, it just takes time for him to recover and additional encouragement would be helpful.

It was an honor to be the club's ambassador to cheer Brett up.

The news I’ve been getting is all, thankfully, good!

Chris Springer, our newest member, signs a big baseball for our ailing member Brett Grant. President-elect Bill Pierce brought it to our joint meeting with the Las Vegas Fremont club. Many members signed the toy and it'll be given to Brett. Knock it out of the park, big guy. We love you. We miss you. And we want you back soon. We need your expertise and help with the fundraising efforts.

The joyful headline on this piece comes from the email the club received today from Rick Jakel, the good friend to our club, and mentor and best buddy to our own Brett Grant.

To use a baseball allegory that would, we hope, bring a smile to Brett: There is joy in Mudville. Mighty Brett is getting better.

Rick reports:
"Just hung up a short time ago with Emily, Brett’s remarkable daughter.She told me that he had progressed to where today he is able to nod his head “yes” or shake it “no” . . . however he still cannot talk because of the tracheotomy.

He continues to improve and 10 minutes ago was scheduled to go back into surgery to hopefully get his incision closed up.

Right now the news I’ve been getting is all, thankfully, good!

More as I hear further updates."

That's wonderful news, indeed, from Rick. Brett's many friends are cheered.

We had more wonderful news at our joint meeting with the Las Vegas Fremont club Tuesday.

Right there beside our esteemed PDG Tom Novotny, was his lovely -- and equally hard-working wife Robin. She looked as radiant as ever, just a week after a cancer operation at St. Rose Hospital in Henderson.

We love you Robin. Great to see you looking so well.

And then, last night, came this update from Kathy Grant at the Care Pages website:

Dr. Pigazzi was able to close Brett's abdomen today.

He is very aware but still frustrated because he cannot speak. The doctor also put in a feeding tube. Next step will be to get him off vent so he can talk.

He has been receiving the cards you are sending to the hospital. Emily reads them to him. She read all the comments on the poster that was signed last week at the All Star game too.

More good news from Kathy Grant
Brett's vent settings were lowered again today. He's breathing on his own with little support.

He is aware of his surroundings, but frustrated because he can't talk.

Surgeons are trying to close up abdomen tomorrow, but they may not be able to.

Doctors are pleased with his progress, but say he has a long way to go.

Emily started reading him the get well cards and pictures you have all been sending.

Indian wrestling? That's great news
Rick Jakel reports this wonderful story
Just hung up with Don Grant, Brett’s father, a short time ago. I took notes as we talked and the best quote was: “Signs are super that he is on his way.”

There have been improvements in Brett’s condition every day since Friday.

Don told me they are going to be weaning him off the ventilator. Because of his tracheotomy he cannot yet talk but he can push his legs and move his foot, arms and knees.

His hands remain swollen, but there has been a dramatic reduction in his overall swelling. There is a lot of eye movement.

He apparently is in some pain with the withdrawal of the sedatives. They are able to give him a little water through sponges.

Don told Brett that he could “beat him Indian wrestling and Brett pushed back against my arm.”

Sorry we won’t be at tomorrow's meeting with you—but Sharon and I “made up” at our own home club here in Elgin this noon.

Tanya's earlier visit to the US
Tatiana Vinda, winner of our club's global raffle called It's Vegas, Baby, will be coming to us later this year from her home in Moscow with her daughter Victoria, 14.

Tatania, known to her friends as Tanya, already is an accomplished international traveler. Her VIP vacation to Las Vegas will be at least her second trip to the United States. She also has attended Rotary International conventions in Birmingham, England and Montreal.

At the Birmingham convention, Tanya met Wanda Day, then president of Florida's Marco Islands Sunrise Rotary Club who invited her to visit the Sunshine State.

Tanya also gave the club a short presentation about her home town of Moscow.

At the time, she was president of the Moscow East Rotary Club, one of nine clubs in the Russian capital.

Asked what she liked about Florida, Tanya said: "The beauty of Florida and the beautiful colors of the ocean and gulf."

Asked what most impressed her about the United States, she said, "The hot men here."

Here's hoping Las Vegas men measure up.

News from Tom about Robin

Robin was released from the hospital Saturday about three days ahead of

schedule. She is now recuperating at home which is much easier on her.

While the prognosis is good, she is certainly not out of the woods.

They took 8" of colon out along with 32 lymph nodes. Of the 32, 12 tested positive to cancer. We think that probably will mean chemo which, we are ready for.

We want to thank you for your kind words, thoughts, and prayers as they worked. It is very flattering to know we have friends like all of you.

Better news from Brett
Kathy Grant reports:
Brett is resting comfortably. He is being weaned off all sedation and I don't think he is fully understanding where he is or what has happened. He is trying to speak and recognized family and friends. His lungs are continuing to improve, and his kidneys have started to pick up.

My parents are going home tomorrow, and Brett's parents will remain for at least a few more days. Emily and I am staying in Riverside with Jeff and Angela indefinitely.

Doctors and nursing staff are impressed with Emily. They cannot believe how much grace and maturity she has shown throughout this ordeal.

She is always smiling upon entering Brett's room. I am usually sobbing. Several of the nurses have told me they have never seen such a 15 year old, which makes me very proud.

Boys are still in Las Vegas playing ball. Thanks to all of you who are helping.

Ladies and gents, mark your calendars
Las Vegas West Rotarian Ted Gurr will speak Friday, July 16 at UNLV about conflict risk assessment in the U.S. foreign policy establishment to fellow Rotarian Christine Springer’s Crisis and Emergency Management program.

Ted, distinguished university professor emeritus at the University of Maryland, and founder and consultant to the university's Minorities at Risk project, will zero in on countries at high risk now and discuss the imminent crisis in Sudan.

The audience will include mid-career emergency response officials in the executive MA of Science program.

The talk will be part of a reception between 6 and 8 pm at Greenspun Hall on Maryland Parkway at University Road.

Please dig deep for Brett and his family

As we all know, Brett Grant is in serious condition at City of Hope hospital in Los Angeles following complications from cancer surgery.

Kathy and the family are suppporting Brett as best they can. This means frequent trips to LA for Kathy and the children as well as keeping the home fires burning in Las Vegas, and a consequent heavy financial burden.

We all want to do whatever we can to help the Grant family in this hour of critical need. Friends have set up a donation account for Brett and his family. Anyone can deposit into it at any Wells Fargo branch. The account is in the name of Kathy Grant and the number is 1940733734.

Please dig deep to help the family of our brother Rotarian and one of the brightest lights of our Rotary club. Let us pray that it will not be too long before he is back among us with his characteristic humor and charm; and back in the bosom of his precious family, for which he is such a wonderful dad.

As Rotarians, we are generous in working to help needy people near and far. Brett Grant is one of our own.

Greg Kinkead stepped up early in response to a request for help for Brett. Greg has offered to host Kathy and her family at his condo in Orange County when they are in California. His generosity goes a long way to help the family deal with the high cost of accommodation there. Many thanks, Greg.

Friends:

Talked with Brett’s father last night. He said they had somewhat reduced his sedation and Brett was slightly responsive to voices. Infection appears under control. They are encouraged, but emphasized there’s a long way to go before he’s completely out of the woods.

Kathy Grant: Update on Brett

Brett's out of surgery. Surgeon put in a trach, which will help him breathe and save his vocal chords.

White count is good, but they were unable to close the wound. Said it would be another week or so before they can close the wound.

We are closer to being "out of the woods," as the doctor stated. We are still concerned about his kidney function.

Thank you to all of you who are helping me with the kids, the house, running errands ... and especially prayers. I am returning to California on Saturday.

Emily Grant reports on her dad
Okay, so the doctors are going to clean my dad's wounds and hopefully close him up.

He is not as swollen and he is progressing and the doctors will be waking him up slowly.

He is going to get a tracheotomy so that his vocal cords are not damaged.

The prayers are working. Thanks again.

Went over and visited with Kathy tonight. Brett had a good day. More urine output. Good vent settings. No setbacks or negative news. And that's a very good thing.

His local LV oncologist has been on vacation--got the news about Brett todayand immediately declared himself part of his support team and has been intouch with Brett's surgeon in LA.

Sharon and I travel to Chicago tomorrow. More news as we get it. Thought you would enjoy the images of Coach Brett and Dom.

The Russians are coming ...

When Tatiana Vinda of Moscow got an email from America telling her she'd won a VIP trip to Las Vegas, she first thought it was some kind of joke.

Russians play practical jokes on each other on April Fool's Day just as we do in the United States, but Tatiana didn't know if we did it on the same day.

Maybe, she thought, Americans have a July Fool's Day on the Fourth of July.

She knows better now. She's busy planning her trip to Vegas.

Tatiana is the winner of the mammoth It's Vegas, Baby Internet-based global raffle from The Rotary Club of Las Vegas West.

"I’m absolutely happy to have a chance to visit Las Vegas. I think this city is one of the miracles of the world created by the hands of people," says Tatiana.

"Also I've never stayed in a five-star hotel and never traveled by limousine."

As winner, Tatiana earns a four-day, expenses paid trip to the entertainment capital of the world, including round-trip air fare.

She and a partner will be treated to a stay at one of the world's most glamorous hotels; a top-drawer show and fine dining in smart restaurants with taste-tempting menus, amid the brilliant sunshine of this cosmopolitan desert oasis.

The contest drew attention and entries from around the world. On Sunday, July 4, Independence Day, we drew the winning entry. Tatiana was one of nearly 500 entrants in the groundbreaking raffle.

The contest truly put The Rotary Club of Las Vegas West on the map, with entries from such exotic places as Fiji; Botswana; the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion; and Finland.

The contest was not restricted to Rotarians. Everyone, everywhere, was invited to enter. But the winner is a Rotarian.

Tatiana is a past president of the Rotary Club of Moscow East. The club is named, not for its geographical location in the city, but because its members are people who moved to the capital from areas in eastern Russia.

Tatiana was just settling in back home from a trip to Montreal for RI's annual convention when she got her email sent by President-elect Bill Pierce. Now she's planning on heading back across the Atlantic.

Tatiana is a charter member of the Moscow East club, which was established in 2005. She is the immediate past president.

The divorced mother of Victoria, 14, Tatiana is representative in Moscow of a German company that imports business gifts and promotional items from Europe and China.

"We've had just 20 years of Rotary in Russia," says Tatiana.

"You know that our country was in isolation for many years. Now we are happy to be part of the international Rotarian community."

In Montreal, she says, she was delighted to meet and make friends with Rotarians from around the world.

All proceeds from the contest go to help underprivileged children in at-risk schools in Las Vegas, and the other humanitarian programs of the club.

Our own Tom Novotny, immediate past governor of District 5300, picked Tatiana's winning ticket from a drum at a club barbecue at the home of President-elect Pierce.

Immediately after the drawing, Bill emailed the news to Tatiana, who -- given the time difference -- was fast asleep in Moscow. Entrants in the Internet-based contest were told the winner would be notified by email.

Entrants were obliged to submit email addresses with their Internet entries. Each entry was allotted a paper ticket. Those were then popped into the drum for DG Tom to pick from.

"I want to thank Tom particularly for picking my ticket as the winning entry," says Tatiana.

The contest drew widespread support from people across the world, with notable mass entries from Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Welcome aboard and all hail brave Brett
It is fitting on this first post on the new blog for The Rotary Club of Las Vegas West that we pay tribute to our ailing member Brett Grant as he battles complications from his cancer operation in City of Hope hospital in Los Angeles.

I took the photograph of the usual suspects -- and some others -- Sunday, July 4 at the home of President-elect Bill Pierce, the day of his 21st annual July the Fourth barbecue party.

The group gathered to send affectionate well wishes to Brett and his family. If you look closely, you can see the written good wishes held up by spouses Gina Cox and Robin Novotny. Robin is herself a brave cancer survivor. And she, too, is undergoing yet another operation as this is written.

On behalf of the club and all its members, I send our good wishes to Brett and Robin and their families. And I ask those who pray to do so for these two wonderful people and their families.

Among my goals as president of the club for this Rotary year is to help build a closer fellowship between us all. I'd like us to realize that we all are in this together and so are our families. To that end, I have resurrected the moribund Family of Rotary coordinator. Candace Lansberry has agreed to take on the role. Let's all help her to do a great job.

And oh, before anyone asks, let me answer the unspoken question: The young lady in the bikini adding class and glamor to the shot is Bill and Rose Pierce's lovely and indomitable lass Ashley, herself a tough fighter against a vicious disease. The other sweet young thing at the right is her friend.
